I looked through alot of the questions on this site and was not able to find anything regarding religious holidays in Michigan. Are there any laws giving employees the right to choose to observe thier religious holidays and therefore choosing not to work? My boyfriend is Muslim and there is a Muslim holiday (next Friday I believe) coming up and he was asking me if he is legally "allowed" to take the day off for religious beliefs w/o repercussions. Thanks for the info!

Yes he is allowed.

Have him contact the company and make HR aware of his religious inclination and they should make accomodation.

Failing to do so would be discriminatory IF, and only IF, they allow others to take off for religious holidays.

That's a bit tricky isn't it! Now the plant shuts down for Christmas so would that be considered accomodating other people for religious reasons? Or would they have to be accomodating other Muslims for the same holiday or other Islamic holidays?
Thanks for getting back so fast! This site is really interesting!

Is it called a Christmas break? Then yes, he has the right to ask for accomodation, but he should be prepared to work on Christmas day.
