I work in a hairsalon as a stylist. I have been working in the same salon for about 9 years. The owners are always telling us to sweep the floor, do dishes, laundry and so on. We are paid by hair service that we do. Also they make us come in on days off for meetings and so on without pay . Is that aloud? One more thing, we are made to work set hours even if we don't have any clients. Is this aloud without an hourly pay?

I tried to find something that talked about comission pay, but found nothing, I am not sure if they must pay you a minimum of minimum wage. I also think that if they make you stay on the premises, and you are not allowed to do things in your leisure time, like listen to the radio, read a book, etc, then they must pay you on call time. I am not a pro at this, so please wait for further answers, for I may be wrong. Please read this site, and get the proper forms to file a wage complaint if need be.

Technically it isn't commission that you are earning but in essence, when all the hours you are required to be at work for the week are added up and divided by your total wages earned, it must work out to at least minimum wage. If you work more than 40 hours in a week, then it you must receive the equivalent of time and a half for those hours.
Yes, you can be required to sweep up and perform other small chores aside from just cutting and styling hair. Yes, you can be required to come in for meetings on days you are not otherwise scheduled to work. This time would count toward your work hours for the week.
