When (and how) is lunch and breaks required in Louisiana? During any particular shift or what? Please will someone inform me?

In Louisiana it is entirely up to the employer when or whether either lunch or rest breaks are offered. They are not mandated by either state or Federal law.

So basically, regardless of how many hours you work a shift, in Louisiana, your employer decides if you need a break or lunch?

That's correct. There is no Federal law and no Louisiana law for the general employment public that requires an employer EVER to give a break of any kind. It is entirely up to the employer whether to offer any breaks, if so, how many, and if so, how long they will be, no matter how long the shift is.

There are some industry specific exceptions where there is a public safety factor (airline pilot, truck driver) and a union or other employment contract might specify breaks to be offered. But in general, in your state and many others, it's up to the employer.

If some future president appoints me Labor Secretary that will change. I think every non-exempt and most exempt employees should receive at minimum a lunch break if not rest breaks too. But until some enlightened president sees fit to put me in charge, we're stuck with the laws as they are.
