I was working for a company that decided I wasn't focused on my job and decided to let me go. The district manager sat me down and told me that they would pay me 2 weeks notice and I was free to find another job. They now called me and said that the company has changed hands and by the new company policy they will not pay me the two weeks that was promised to me. Is there anything I can do to get the check promised to me.

A verbal promise is about worth the paper it is written on. Without anything in writing, you'd be hard-pressed to convince the court (this is not a wage and hour law issue) that there was indeed a contract that required you get severance pay. And especially since the company has since changed hands. I see no legal recourse in this situation. Looks like it's time to file for unemployment and just move on.
