That was back in the 1960s. Forty years later, hundreds of thousands of unmarried American women are asking themselves exactly the same question. One of the reasons that so many women can't find a husband is that millions of men have declared a Marriage Strike. Men believe that family courts have become so unfair that in case of divorce, they will lose custody of their children and their ex will take them for all they're worth.

Which are actually not such good reasons not to get married. Even
though many marriages end in divorce, some marriages actually don't
end in divorce. When divorce does happen, the wife tends to have a
career of her own, and hence she is likely to be unsuccessful in her
attempts to take the man for all he's worth. And, if you take Mr
Roberts' (at least this sounds like a man's writing) logic a step too
far, you have to assume that men are choosing not to have children at
all because they're just going to lose custody of them a few years
down the road during the inevitable divorce--- which makes sense only
if having children you don't have custody of is worse than having no
kids at all (and that is not exactly a self-evident proposition!)

Let's see. If you don't have children:
a) You don't see them
b) You don't pay for them

If you have children and don't have custody:
a) You don't see them
b) You pay for them

And this is only from the money side of the matter. Now add all the
heartache, nerve-wracking, anguish, etc. of a custody battle, and

Wow a soc.men post that has the facts wrong.....

- From a report from the CDC

Forty-three percent of first marriages break-up within 15 years

Duration of marriage is linked to a woman?s age at first marriage; the older
a woman is at first marriage, the longer that marriage is likely to last.
For example, 59 percent of marriages to brides under 18 end in separation
or divorce within 15 years, compared with 36 percent of those married at
age 20 or older.

Apples. Buicks. Note that the OP was about not " first marriages ",
but *all marriages*.

Second and third marriages have a rate of divorce higher than
first marriages.

Thanks for showing, once again, that Baby Feminists will *distort
and lie*, so as to *appear* righter than they can ever be...

Sure. Most women are bright enough to realise at, say, 40, that the
divorcing behaviors of 20 somehtings are, well, narcissistic and bad
choices...

Um Andre? Would you care to try to refute the massive evidence that
single women, not single men, are the fastest growing demographic? And
that single women are the second-largest demographic of homeowners,
after marrried couples?

No, I didn't think so.

NO answer to that point ? Good. I like it when Baby Feminists
*conceed*... <g>
Um Andre? Would you care to try to refute the massive evidence that single women, not single men, are the fastest growing demographic?

Feel free to *post some*...

One can certainly deduce that, for every women who stays single,
theres a guy in the same position...

AS in, marriage is 1 + 1. Take away one 1, you take away *both* 1s...
And that single women are the second-largest demographic of homeowners, after marrried couples?

So ? Does that refute that single men are the largest buyers of
large screen teevees, and DVD player ?

Buying a houes, in a low interest rate market, is a good idea.
Its too bad that so many men can't afford to buy one, due to
their having been *raped* by the femicentric family kourt
system...

You just failed the " compare like to like " statistical test.
No, I didn't think

Indeed.
so.

When divorce does happen, the wife tends to have a career of her own, and hence she is likely to be unsuccessful in her attempts to take the man for all he's worth. And, if you take Mr Roberts' (at least this sounds like a man's writing) logic a step too far, you have to assume that men are choosing not to have children at all because they're just going to lose custody of them a few years down the road during the inevitable divorce--- which makes sense only if having children you don't have custody of is worse than having no kids at all (and that is not exactly a self-evident proposition!)

Start by questioning the notion that there are an equal number of men
and women in the population. Heck, Vietnam took tens of thousands of
men out of the population, as will the current war-debacle.

I recall reading a piece in Washingtonian back in the '80's to the
effect that in the DC area of the day, there were ten percent more
single women than single men.

But yeah, I wouldn't mind a contemporary cite, either.

> There is a 60% chance of ending in divorce.

That statistic is correct perhaps somewhere, but in the USA and Canada
the divorce
rate is around 43 to 45 percent.

Considering the age of most people when they get married and their
experience, it
is amazing the divorce rate isn't higher.

The other mistake is that it has nothing to do with feminism directly.
When women were permitted to stay in the home and live on household
allowances,
women never left the marriage because they couldn't. Today with women
being
well educated, thousands of job opportunities, part-time and full-time,
women
believe that if the guy isn't holding up hise end of the marriage vows,
there
are other opportunities for the wife beyond her household allowance.
This
has nothing to do with femanism. It has to do with economics and civil
rights.

It used to be that men took a wife and built her a house to live in.
Today men and women sign a marriage contract and build a house and
family
together. A breach of contract has consequences.

It also used to be that men had to marry or take a wife. Now, only a
fool, and I
repeat only a fool would take a wife or marry unless they were committed
to the
process and all its consequences. While men still are programmed to
taking a wife
or marrying, in time - men are slow learners - they will consider their
options and
decide how they want to proceed. For many it may mean adopting a son as
a single parent
and doing it alone just as women are doing. Most men certianly have the
money to do it,
they just haven't figured it out or realized there are options in inside
and outside of
marriage just like there are options for the kind of beer they drink.

Indeed. But misandrists like echinopsia don't like to acknowledge
*that* imbalance...

Aye, and that beauty is in the eye of the beer holder.

Start by questioning the notion that there are an equal number of men and women in the population. Heck, Vietnam took tens of thousands of men out of the population, as will the current war-debacle. I recall reading a piece in Washingtonian back in the '80's to the effect that in the DC area of the day, there were ten percent more single women than single men.

That's because women migrate there hoping to MARRY into POLITICAL POWER.

But yeah, I wouldn't mind a contemporary cite, either.
