I know it is at-will employment but what if your manager makes up that you did something ethically wrong when you didn't and that ethical violation can hurt your future chances at employment?

It is malicious. Please advise. Thanks

Generally speaking "at will" employment means that either the employee or employer may end the employment relationship at any time for any or no reason. Your post is way to brief to offer an educated opinion. Care to share the circumstances? Thanks!

Way too general a statement to answer. In general, your employer need not be correct about their reason for termination. That doesn't make it a wrongful termination which only comes into play when there is a law or public policy that prohibits your employer for firing you for the reason they did. Believeing or saying you were unethical is not even close, even if untrue.

It isn't clear how this would affect future employment. Being fired isn't the kiss of death many think it is. If it were, the unemployment rate would be way higher than it is. Why would this situation have any bearing on future jobs?

Said I leaked non-public info but this is totally untrue. The info in question was already out there.

It was a malicious attempt to hurt me, in my opinion. When you go to fill out applications, it asks if you have ever been discharged and it asks if you
were discharged for ethics for example. They never really told me an exact
reason for termination. The ethics thing was prior to the termination as it caused a suspension. Should I just say layoff?

So if you were suspended for leaking the info you shouldn't have, why were you terminated?

Applications usually ask why you left employment. I'd just say you were terminated as your employer believed you violated a policy. It doens't have to be a deal breaker. Lying to say you were laid off when you weren't would be a deal breaker for most.

In any case, nothing you posted indicates anything illegal happened.

Would it be ok to say we disagreed over a policy? We both feel we are right.
I know I am right...seriously, I do.

This is touchy in interviews.

Sucks. I had such a stellar track record and now this.
