I have been with this company for 18 months and have since went from sales, to being company supervisor and also website developer/maintainer. I was fired on Friday with the allegations of wasting company time with internet usage and deleting my history. Now, I know of two other ppl in my office who work below me who were guilty of the same thing, but only I got fired. I believe there is more to the story but I just get a msg from my employer saying they are wrapping up other matters. Am I obligated to know about these other claims? Are they allowed to keep me in the dark? I do have personal items in my office that I brought in from home due to personal reasons. Are they allowed to use any of these against me?

Unless you have a bona fide employment contract, you were an at-will employee who could be fired at any time for any reason that is not specifically prohibited by law. They don't have to give you a reason for firing you, and they don't have to discuss all of the specifics.

It is not illegal to fire someone who wastes or is perceived to waste time on the internet.

It is not illegal to hold supervisors to a higher standard than the employees they supervise.

And exactly what personal items did you bring to work that can be used against you?

If it was anything illegal, the company owns your workspace and can, therefore, search it and turn anything they find over to the police.

In reference to your personal items you mention a photo cd. Are these pictures on a cd you brought in to put on your work computer? If so, was permission granted for this? A lot of companies have IT/computer usage policies in place that require permission of any non-company provided/approved items before installation on their computers.
