I recently gave 2 week notice to leave my current job and was asked to leave immediately. I am not the first person to leave and I know that others have been paid for the 2 weeks anyway. I was told that they have a new policy and that if an employee gives notice the company can accept immediately with no compensation due. This new policy change was never made 'public' that I am aware of.

1. Is this legal, if having givien written notice?
2. If they had previously paid other employees does this not constitue a precedent, and can they just say - we're changing the policy?

1.) This is legal in all 50 states whether or not you gave written notice and whether or not they have a written policy. You have no legal expectation of being paid after the last day you actually worked, regardless of who decided that you would not work it.

2.) No, barring a binding contract that says otherwise it doesn't matter what other employees got. Yes, they can just say, we're changing the policy. SOMEONE has to be the first to be held to any new policy.

However, you should immediately file for unemployment benefits wherein you will more than likely be determined eligible for the two (2) week notice period that you were not permitted to work.

Be advised that it is possible that MI observes a one (1) week waiting period, but I cannot recall for certain right now.
