I have worked for a construction company as an office manager for the past 4 years. I had always gotten excellent reviews and lot's of "at-a-girls". I always did more than what was required of me, and anytime I was told to do something, I did it, no questions asked. I should mention that this company is a contractor to a government agency. About 2 months ago the government agency started a new safety training that all onsite would have to take. The person giving the training had to take an 8 hour course on how to give the training. I asked my boss to go, but he wouldn't let me, saying he would get trained, then train me. It didn't work that way, only the ones who went to the class could give the training. I should also mention, that as the only female, I put up with ALOT of sexual discrimination.

Last Friday, my boss came to me and told me I would be giving the training from now on. I told him I was not trained and could not do it. He got angry and refused to speak to me the rest of the day. This was typical with him, so I didn't think too much of it. On Monday, he came to me and told me to get my hard hat, we were going to take a golf cart and check on a job. I thought it was strange, but went anyway. He drove us out to a remote spot and began yelling at me, telling me what a horrible person I was, cursing at me, and that I would do what he said, regardless of the rules. After about 15 minutes of this he took me back to my office. I called our HR person and put in my 2 week notice. Later that day, the HR person and the main boss of the company came to the site, spoke with my boss privately, then told me it was my word against his, and they made my notice effective immediately. I was given 5 minutes to get my things and was escorted off site.

I'm sorry that was so long, but I shortened it as much as possible. Here is my question: Is there anything legal I can do about the way I was treated? And since they refused to let me work out my notice, am I entitled to the 2 weeks pay?

I'll answer the second question first. No, under the law they are not required to pay you for an unworked notice, regardless of the circumstances under which it was not worked. It is possible, depending on your state law, that you might qualify for unemployment for that two weeks.

As to the rest, there is no law against being a jerk. It was not illegal to require you to do the training and it was not illegal to yell at you. There is no legal recourse due to you for that.

However, if while you were on the job you were subjected to illegal discrimination, you can contact the EEOC about that. NOTICE: it will count against you that you did nothing about it until after you left under poor circumstances - it will look like retaliation.
