Hello all, would filing for unemployment compensation hurt (tarnish) my work history in any way? Would filing for unemployment compensation lower my chances or prevent me from getting hired for other jobs in the future?

I don't think so. Millions of people have had to rely on unemployment between jobs. There's no stigma attached to it.

Unless you tell them, a prospective employer is not even going to KNOW you were on unemployment. It's not public information; it does not show in a background check.

But the whole purpose of unemployment is to provide income to those who lose their jobs through no fault of their own. Why in heavens name would that count against you?

I will echo the thoughts and sentiments of Marketeer and cbg.

And, for the most part, it is a fairly painless process ... unless you have resaon to believe your employer may contest the claim.
