 I was hired on Wednesday to start a job. I filled all the approiate paper work. W-4 application and all. I was to start that friday. Thursday I get a call telling me that are not going to fill the position. My Brother inturn calls me and tells me that a supervisor that works there that has a personal issue with me went and told them not to hire me. He told my brother that family couldn't work togther, Well they have brothers, daddy's and uncles working there. My brother told him that that was not the reason and he told my brother that as long as he worked there that Iwould not. This is discrimination in my book. I quit my other job that Wednesday after I was told I had the job. NOW I have no job. can you please advise on what legal authority I have against this company and the man that presented defamation of character against me. Thanks Paul

This is discrimination in my book. Okay, but the legal books say something entirely different. Unless they're refusing to hire you because of your race, age, gender, religion, etc., then this is not prohibited discrimination.
There is no evidence that you have been defamed either.

Well, then would it be considered slander to my name if what he said about my character is what kept me from getting the job. I had the job. Then they called and said I didn't and it was because of this man. Personnel saw no problem with my work history of ethics. Thats why they hired me on the spot. It wasn't until this individual went to personnel that the job was taken from me.

Unfortunately, I don't see that you have any legal recourse against the company. You might try appealing to someone in a position higher in the company than that of the supervisor. Your brother should be able to tell you who in the company can overturn the supervisor's and personnel's decision not to employ you. You should appeal to that person.
If there is a personal issue between you and the supervisor and he so informed the company, you haven't been defamed.
