Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but was wondering how much you can add to the actual premium as an administration fee for COBRA in CA. I used to live in Indiana and it was 2 percent there, but I know it varies from state to state. Thanks.

No, it doesn't vary from state to state. COBRA is a Federal law. It's 2% everywhere.

Thanks. I thought I had read something at one time when I was first learning about COBRA that the fee varied in other states. But, I guess I am wrong. All of this stuff tends to get muddled in your brain when you don't deal with it every day.

I suppose it's possible that STATE continuation plans (as opposed to the Federal COBRA) might vary. Perhaps that's what you heard.

But the 2% administration fee is set by Federal law; the states cannot amend that.

BTW, an employer can choose to charge only a 1% fee; or none at all. They just can't exceed 2%.
