Im 17 years old.How can i get emacapated so i can leave home?

I live in NC, and I can tell you that emancipation is rarely granted (actually, it’s rare in any state). I even know of a case in NC where the minor’s parents didn’t even contest the emancipation and still the judge denied it. It is rare. It is also not a quick or easy process.

Basically you have to provide proof of employment and your wages must be sufficient to fully support yourself (paying for rent, utilities, food, medical expenses, etc) without any assistance (which means no help from family, friends, etc). You also have to provide a valid reason that emancipation would be in your best interest. So what’s your reason? The court can also require other things. And the court can deny emancipation for any reason that they see fit, including (but not limited to) their believe that you lack the maturity/ability to function as an adult.
