I'm so worried. I am 12 weeks pregnant and I know I will need to take time off when the baby is born. My company has 23 employees so I know the FMLA won't protect me. I also can't survive without pay. The father of my child is no where to be found.....He seems to think running away from me will keep him from paying child support but I WILL find him eventually. Is there any insurance that I could get that won't exclude this pregnancy from coverage? I don't think you can get disability coverage for pregnancy in MD. I just worry about the possibility of complications and bills piling up while I';m on leave. I'm saving every bit of money that I can. Any suggestions?

Unless your employer has already provided a disability policy that will cover you, there's nothing I can think of. (Even if FMLA applied, that is unpaid leave.) Pregnancy cannot be excluded from disability policies but if you are already pregnant it's unlikely you can buy a policy at this time that will cover you for the birth.

Have you asked your employer what benefits he might offer? Would he allow you to take vacation or sick time for part of the time you are out?

MD doesn't offer disability so a private plan would be your only option. I agree you should speak to your employer about what they may be able to offer.
