Hello all!

Great site you have here.

Let me get to the point.

I work in a plastics plant in S.C. where I just relocated from Arkansas. I have been employed there for a little over a month as a Shift Supervisor. The owner has threatened to deduct the cost of replacing brooms, dustpans, and shovels from the mine and the 3 other Supervisors paychecks. We got the memo yesterday, and we will see if deductions have been made in a few days.

Is this legal in S.C.? In A.R. it is not. Can't seem to find any specific info to S.C. labor law on the web.

What options, do we have in fighting this if it occurs? I'm not the suing type, but will fight pettiness with pettiness if need be.

Thanks for any advice.

I'll let Patty or CMorgan answer the question of whether it is legal to ACTUALLY make such deductions.

It is not illegal to THREATEN to make them. Even assuming that the actual deduction is illegal, he can threaten all he likes; it's only if an illegal deduction is taken that you can file a claim.

Nope, not without your written authorization to deduct. See Section III here:
