Lisa Beamer on Good Morning America - If you remember, she's the wife
of Todd Beamer who said "Let's Roll!" and helped take down the plane
that was heading for Washington, D.C.

She said it's the little things that she misses most about Todd, such
as hearing the garage door open as he came home, and her children
running to meet him. She's now the Mom of a beautiful little girl,
Mary.

Lisa recalled this story:

I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago whose
husband died suddenly of a heart attack. About a week after his death,
she shared some of her insight with a classroom of students. As the
late afternoon sunlight came streaming in through the classroom
windows and the class was nearly over, she moved a few things aside on
the edge of her desk and sat down there.

With a gentle look of reflection on her face, she paused and said,
"Class is over. I would like to share with all of you, a thought that
is unrelated to class, but which I feel is very important.

"Each of us is put here on earth to learn, share, love, appreciate and
give of ourselves. None of us knows when this fantastic experience
will end. It can be taken away at any moment. Perhaps this is the
Powers way of telling us that we must make the most out of every
single day."

Her eyes beginning to water, she went on, "So I would like you all to
make me a promise. From now on, on your way to school, or on your way
home, find something beautiful to notice. It doesn't have to be
something you see, it could be a scent, perhaps of freshly baked bread
wafting out of someone's house, or it could be the sound of the breeze
slightly rustling the leaves in the trees, or the way the morning
light catches one autumn leaf as it falls gently to the ground.

"Please look for these things, and cherish them. For, although it may
sound trite to some, these things are the 'stuff' of life. The little
things we are put here on earth to enjoy. The things we often take for
granted. We must make it important to notice them, for at anytime it
can all be taken away."

The class was completely quiet. We all picked up our books and filed
out of the room silently. That afternoon, I noticed more things on my
way home from school than I had that whole semester.

Every once in a while, I think of that teacher and remember what an
impression she made on all of us, and I try to appreciate all of those
things that sometimes we all overlook.

Take notice of something special you see on your lunch hour today. Go
barefoot, or walk on the beach at sunset. Stop off on the way home
tonight to get a double dip ice cream cone. For as we get older, is
not the things we did that we often regret, but the things we didn't
do.

Remember, life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but
by the moments that take our breath away.

Know what I don't understand - why is this lady a celebrity? What about the
spouses of the other people who helped take them down? She even tried to
trademark "let's roll", didn't she? As if it's never been said before...

The whole 9/11 thing is so overdone. I'll bet not 10 miles from the WTC,
some guy died in a car accident on the way home that very day. Nobody held a
concert for him, nobody donated any money. Nobody knows his name. No
memorial for him. No book deal for his wife.

Die in a building, your family gets lots of money and maybe even fame. Die
some other way in the same area on the same day? Squat.

I agree with the message - enjoy life. I'm amazed at how many need to be
told to do just that.

oops - wasn't her directly. But she's cool with it. It'll benefit her kids.

She simply decided to become a voice. That was (is) her way of coping
with a heinous crime. I don't know if I'd call her celebrity, just
someone who needed to stand up and give the survivors a face. The whole 9/11 thing is so overdone. I'll bet not 10 miles from the WTC, some guy died in a car accident on the way home that very day. Nobody held a concert for him, nobody donated any money. Nobody knows his name. No memorial for him. No book deal for his wife.

I don't agree with you but I'll certainly accept our different ways of
looking at it. Die in a building, your family gets lots of money and maybe even fame. Die some other way in the same area on the same day? Squat.

Not neccesarily. A UPS driver in our area died in a horrid car
accident not far from our house. His head actually got decapitated.
He left behind 3 little girls and a young wife. She ended up with
quite a sum of money. Fame? It was a big deal in this neck of the
woods. I guess it's all a matter of what you call fame. Is this
woman doing it for fame? Is she trying to keep her husband's name
alive? Why do people decide to become committed to a cause? How
about John whatshisname who started that crime show when his son was
abducted in Florida 25 years ago? What about the mom who started
MADD? Perhaps it's too difficult for you to take that stretch and
imagine what it's like to be left behind, whether it was 2,000 others
who died or if it was a family of 4 left behind. I can't begin to
imagine what it's like but I can empathize and I sometimes wonder how
it is that some survived and some died.

I don't know about you JWB, but I get so caught up in the daily grind,
the dishes, work, my daughter's life, doing things for my family ,
etc. that it is sometimes hard to see the forest through the trees.
For me, stories like this remind me about what to focus on.

We take our health for granted until we come down with strep throat.
How many of us wake up each day and thank our lucky stars for having a
car that runs, a hot cup of coffee, a comfortable bed, healthy kids,
and a safe bus to send our kids off to school? It's often the case
that until those things are taken away from us, that we realize how
good we had it.

I don't know if you're the rarity or if I am, but I need
inspiriational stories periodically so that I can get out of my own
little world.

Good points. But I'm kinda dismayed at all the attention the "9/11 families"
got. Like some of them complained they didn't get more money. Huh?

Yes, they had loved ones die in a terrible crime. But how is that different
from the families of 5 people killed in a "workplace massacre". Or two slain
in a holdup attempt. Where's good morning america then?

I've never been that busy on a consistent basis, but I think not having kids
is one (big) reason.

We take our health for granted until we come down with strep throat.

I've always been healthy, but I excersize, take vitamins, I quit smoking, I
see the dentist regularly. I don't take my health for granted at all. But
I'm the unusual one here - I'm the only one in my "group" (so to say) who
takes vitamins and excersizes regularly.

I don't thank lucky stars for my coffee and car, but I think I understand
what you mean - I am thankful I happened to be born to a US family, and not
to someone in Siberia, for example. I am also fortunate in that my parents
were somewhat educated and firmly in the middle class.
