I work in PA and am about to go on maternity leave. My employer is very small, only 4 employees, and they are a non-profit organization, therefore not falling under federal FMLA rules. The employee handbook for the company states that I can take up to 6 weeks of unpaid leave. My husband recently lost his job and is receiving unemployment benefits from NJ. So, when I'm on leave, we will only be receiving his benefits. My question is: Is there anything from the PA state or federal government that I can use to get any compensation during my maternity leave? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!
PA is not one of the very few states that provides a state disability plan or requires paid maternity leave.
The only thing I can suggest is to look into whether you qualify for any kind of welfare benefit.

No, there isn't. PA is one of the majority of states which do not have a state disability program (RI, NJ, NY, CA, HI only do). So unless you had purchased short term disability insurance either on your own or through your employer, you're on your own. It's possible that your county may offer some type of assistance for low-income individuals, however. Check with the social service agency in your county.

I completed a qualifying questionnaire on PA's Social Services website. Unfortunately, we are not eligible because we have too much in liquid assets, and my husband receives too much in unemployment (NJ is more generous than a lot of other states). I guess we'll just have to go through some savings while I'm on leave.
Thank you for your council.
