Hi - we were just told today that our company will be "ramping down" by April 2007. We were also told that more information would be available on Aug. 8th (appx 6 wks from today) and no one will be laid off between now and then. My assumption is that I could be laid off any time after Aug. 8. I live in San Diego CA and am currently 17 wks pregnant. I can switch to my husbands medical insurance, but don't know what I will qualify for if I'm unemployed and pregnant. I could look for a new job in August (being 6months pregnant), and collect unemployment right? If I don't find a job and have the baby what if anything to I continue to qualify for? FMLA, STD, unemployment...etc. Do I still have to apply for jobs on maternity leave to qualify for it all?

My company is 50,000+ employees

You can wait until you are laid off to switch to your husband's insurance - your lay off will be a "qualifying event" that will allow him to add you on even if it is not his normal sign up time.

You will be eligible for unemployment. You will have to be looking (even though realistically the chances of getting hired at 6 months pregnant are pretty slim). You can then switch over to SDI once your doctor says you are no longer able to work, and when that runs out, then get Paid Family Leave for 6 more weeks, and then go back on unemployment (you will have to be actively looking for work at this point to qualify).

The only thing that will change is that your SDI benefits will be taxable as payments in lieu of unemployment.
