I work for a private ambulance service. Let me stress that we are not first responders in any fashion. We are primarily a transport service between facilities and from facility back to residences.
2 years ago the company started enforcing a "one on-callday a month" policy. Since January, this policy has changed to two on-call days amonth, with mandatory overtime for the days you are called in. I already work 48 hours a week on the regular schedule by working two 24 hour shifts. My employer has decided that if employees do not respond to their callup, or do not call to verify they are not needed by 7am of their on-call day, they will be terminated.
My employer does pay the required time and a half for hours over 40. Can my employer demand the up to 16 hours of overtime for each on-call day they are demanding? What woul dbe the rights of myself and fellow employees to not work so much mandatory overtime. I'm going to have 66 hours this week along with my mandatory overtime day.
