We are a small manufacturer in Kansas. The unemployment rate in our county is very very low. As a result we can not hire the number of employees necessary to fill the customers orders in a timely manner. We work 10 hours per day 6 days per week. We currently pay time and one half for any hours over 40. If we decide to ask for volunteers for one Sunday per month, do we need to pay double time for the 7th day in a work week? Are there laws that limit the number of days one can work before double time or additional compensation is required? (yes we realize this is not the best choice, employees need family time, etc.)

The only state where double time is ever required by law is California. Kansas has no law requiring that you ever pay anything but time and a half for hours over forty in a week. An additional premium for working seven consecutive days would be a nice gesture if you choose to offer it, but it is not required by law.

Kansas is not one of the very few states that limits either the number of days in a week, or the number of hours in a day, that an employee can be required to work. As long as you pay time and a half over 40 hours in a week, you could technically require employees to work 24/7/365. (Yes, you are right; not a good idea but legal nonetheless.)
