I am a post-graduate student in VA. Can anyone tell me what my rights are relating to maternity? Does FMLA apply to me (since I'm not employed)? My department director is threatening to kick me out of the program based on the maternity leave that I am taking. Do I have any rights as a student in the area?

My wife and I are adopting a baby. I am currently a student, and it appears that there may be a chance that we may have a baby to "pick up" in May. My finals are in May. Do I have any laws to assist me if my professors give me a hard time (I suspect that at least one will...). Thanks!

First of all, congrats to you and your wife! That is so exciting. I don't know if you have other children. But, if you don't, you will soon find that having a child in your life is the most life-changing, challenging which is, nevertheless, the most rewarding experience you will ever have. (I have two kids myself.)

Second, I am not aware of any law that will assist you. I'm sorry. You may just want to throw yourself at their mercy. Professors can't be all that heartless, can they?
