I am a superintendent in a large manufacturing facility in Montana. When I had a recent disagreement with my department manager I went to the Plant Manager and discussed my concerns. When my department manager found out he called me in and told me "You will not ever go talk to the plant manager like that again." I told him this was my choice, and if I did not feel I was getting resolution to an issue with him, I would indeed go talk to the Plant Manager again. He then stated "Let me be perfectly clear about this. You will NEVER do that again. If you do, you will not be happy with what happens to you."

the PLant manager and I have always had an "open door" policy and communicate well. I see this as slamming that door shut, denying me access to the Manager, and threatening me with some form of discipline if I do.
Is it legal for him to tell me I cannot go and speak to upper management?

Maybe you should have a sit-down with the Dept. Manager and the Plant Manager to clear the air and set things straight.
