Firehouses can accept infants
County designates sites under Safely Surrendered Baby Law
02/01/2005
Alameda County fire stations have joined hospitals as "safe-surrender" sites
for newborn babies under a resolution approved by county supervisors.
The resolution is in keeping with California's Safely Surrendered Baby Law,
which allows newborns under 72 hours old to be legally dropped off at
designated sites. Social services officials say the law saves infant lives by
providing a safe haven where they can be legally surrendered.
Social Services Agency spokeswoman Sylvia Myles said the supervisors' action
last week designated county fire stations as drop-off sites and authorized
individual cities within the county's jurisdiction to pass similar resolutions
designating their city-run firehouses as drop-off sites.
Myles anticipates that individual cities will pass similar resolutions over the
next several months.
Supervisors approved the resolution 4-0 without discussion in Gail Steele's
absence.
