A news item on NBC Nightly News has me confused. It appears in the Tsunami
disaster a baby hippo was left orphaned, but now a 100-year old turtle (and
it was a HUGE turtle) has taken on the role of the hippos mother. Supposed
to be a news item to help people see that there is good things happening in
that area of the world after the disaster. But Di has repeatedly informed
us that adoption is unnatural and doesn't occur in the wild. So I am
confused. Someone please help me.

I saw the item several times on CNN, etc. The turtle is actually 120! Hippo
was apparently drawn to the turtle due to similar coloring ...not unusual to
me since I've seen Collies -- sables, tris, and blues -- spot another of the
same color from 300 yards across the park and take off merrily barking "hello"
to their new best bud ;-) My dear Heidi Jane would only allow Jake (both tris)
to lie back to back with her for nap time. Honest!
The reporter mentioned that the hippo will soon be placed with other hippos
as it will soon be way too big...why does *that* matter? ...but that being
with a friend helped to ease the anxiety caused by the world's having been
turned topsy turvy. Can't say as I blame the poor thing...and it sure looked
to me like the turtle was happy to have a friend.
