Hundreds plead to adopt

ADOPTION agencies have been overwhelmed by calls from hundreds of British
couples wanting to adopt orphans of the tsunami.

Adoption UK has been swamped with almost ten times its usual inquiries.

And the Overseas Adoption Helpline has received more than four times its normal
number of requests.

Agencies have responded with caution because some children may still be
reunited with relatives.

OAH Director Gill Haworth said adopting a child from overseas could take up to
two years and cost £10,000 — made up of £2,000 to £5,000 for the
application and assessment fee, plus travel costs.
