France may streamline adoption of tsunami orphans

PARIS, Jan 3 (AFP) - Foreign Minister Michel Barnier said Monday that France
was ready to streamline procedures to facilitate adoption of orphans of the
devastating waves that stuck countries around the Indian Ocean.

"While the countries affected maintain their prerogatives, we could put into
place a special mechanism under my ministry which is charged with international
adoption," Barnier said on the TF1 private television station.

But the minister insisted "we must take into account what the countries of
these children want, we must respect these countries."

Barnier was responding to a suggestion to facilitate adoption of tsunami
orphans during a special program on French aid to victims.

The December 26 quake and the tsunamis it triggered killed nearly 150,000
people and left millions in need.
