Toddler headed back to Illinois
Published: Friday, December 31, 2004
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Evan Scott, a 3-year-old boy at the center of
three-way custody battle, was handed over to his biological mother from
Illinois Thursday.
Evan's mother, Amanda Hopkins, who lives on a Navy base in Illinois with her
husband, picked up the boy for a "transitional visit" to his new home.
After the visit, Evan is expected to return to Florida for about a week before
moving to Illinois, unless Dawn and Gene Scott, who have cared for the boy
since his birth in May 2001 can overturn a judge's order denying them custody.
The Scotts hugged and kissed their son as they handed him over. "He's anxious
and a little distraught," Gene Scott told reporters.
outside his home in Atlantic Beach. He said Evan was only told he was going to
visit Hopkins.
The Scotts had attempted to adopt Evan, but it hit a snag when the boy's
biological father, Steven White Jr., objected to the adoption and sought
custody of the boy. When that happened, the biological mother sought and was
granted custody. She and the boy's father never married and she has since
married a Navy sailor and they have an infant daughter.
The Scotts will continue trying to overturn the judge's ruling, said Susan
Pniewski, their attorney.
While the biological mother will have custody, the court ordered that the boy's
biological father be given liberal visitation rights.

A good friend will come and bail you out of jail . . . but, a true friend will
be sitting next to you saying, "Damn . . . that was fun!"
