I am a manager over several technicians in Florida. There was a peice of equipment(a trailor) in North Carolina that they wanted in Florida that night. I was told to get 2 of my employees to start driving north to Georgia to meet somone. The 2 employees had worked 8 hours that day so far. Aleast 4 of those hours was driving. They asked if they could get some sleep and start driving early in the morning because they were concerned about falling asleep. I was told to tell them to get on the road now or they do not need to bother comming back to work.
I questioned My H.R. department. How long can you make a person work and how long we can make them drive without a break. I was told there are no limits. In recent times the comapny has made technicians drive with out sleep over 2 days at a time. It is not straight thru. They would drive an hour or 2 fix somthing taking about 20 minutes. Then back on the road again. Was just wondering what law and thoughts are on this.
Another time the trailor mention above was needed to be moved from Florida to another state. The technician that was taking it north was driving the speed limit in a rain storm. I was told to tell him to drive faster. As a manager I want to what is right for the company but wat is safe for everyone.
