Opening adoption records

Guelph, Ont. -- In spite of your concern that opening adoption records to adult
adoptees without restriction would harm birth parents (What Disclosure Should
Adopted Children Expect? -- editorial, Nov. 27), there is no documented
evidence to support this conclusion. British Columbia reports no violations of
its contact veto.

England, with unrestricted access to identifying information for adoptees since
1976, has recently extended this right to birth parents.

In fact, there is much scientific evidence detailing the benefits of opening
adoption records. It is time to take a hard look at the evidence and bring
Ontario out of the dark ages of adoption policy.
