Governor Proclaims November as 'California Court Adoption and Permanency Month'
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
today proclaimed November 2004 as "California Court Adoption and Permanency
Month" to recognize the significant contributions made by adoptive families and
highlight the need of foster care children to receive permanent homes.
"Adopting a child helps to ensure that vulnerable children mature into
successful, productive adults," said Bob Sertich, chief deputy director of the
California Department of Social Services (CDSS). "Providing a child with a safe
and secure environment offers lasting rewards to both the family and the
community."
"California Court Adoption and Permanency Month" will be observed by many
county social services agencies through community events, such as Adoption Day
in Court, adoption picnics, adoption Saturday ceremonies and public service
announcements.
CDSS reports that out of more than 92,000 California children living in child
welfare supervised foster care, an estimated 8,000 foster children were adopted
into permanent homes in 2003. Children are placed in adoptive homes by public
and private adoption agencies, which work tirelessly to find the best homes for
foster kids who cannot safely return to their families due to any number of
circumstances.
"We encourage interested families to consider adoption because foster children
deserve loving homes and the nurturing that can help boost their
self-confidence and value to society," said Sertich.
CDSS has seven district adoption offices located statewide that provide direct
independent adoption services to 55 counties. Prospective parents can view
children available for adoption through California's photo-listing service at
www.cakidsconnection.com. General adoption information packets can be obtained
by calling CDSS' information and referral service at 1-800-KIDS-4-US.
Information about California adoption requirements and access to a directory of
public and private adoption agencies can also be obtained at
