Melinda is a model choice to boost fostering
Monday 18 October 2004
Television celebrity Melinda Messenger proved a model choice to boost Newham
Council’s campaign to recruit more foster carers and prospective adopters.
Melinda, who has previously been voted Celebrity Mother of the Year, wants to
foster when her three children are a little older.
Newham currently has a number of children awaiting adoption. The council looks
after more than 700 children but there are still more than 80 of all ages and
from all communities in need of permanent families via long term fostering or
adoption.
There is a particular shortage of foster carers for new-born babies and
children aged up to two.
Melinda visited Newham’s Placement Services office in Wordsworth Avenue,
Manor Park, on Thursday to promote the borough’s recruitment drive.
She posed with children who have modelled for the council’s campaign in front
of a new exhibition stand that will tour the borough.
Newham’s Mayor Sir Robin Wales said: “We already have some excellent foster
carers and it is very rewarding but unfortunately there are insufficient
numbers to meet the needs of all children requiring placements.
“Anyone can apply to become a foster carer, and there are many different ways
to get involved. We urge people to come forward and find out more.”
Melinda said: “I feel very passionately about fostering and adoption. All
adults have a responsibility to provide children with a safe upbringing.
Children's happiness is one of the most important things in life so anything
that I can do to boost Newham’s campaign is a real pleasure.
“I cannot imagine anything more important than fostering. I can think of a
billion and one reasons why you should consider fostering and adoption but not
one reason why not.”
At various times between now and March the council will have fostering and
adoption advertising on buses and large posters on high street sites.
Leaflets explaining fostering and adoption have been produced for an exhibition
stand that will tour shopping centres.
The stand will be at Stratford Shopping Centre on October 18 and November 1,
Ilford Exchange on November 11 and Beckton’s Gallions Reach at a date to be
fixed.
Added Sir Robin: “Both fostering and adoption provide a safe, welcoming and
nurturing environment for a child often when they are at a most vulnerable time
of their lives.
“Newham is not alone in having a severe shortage of foster carers. We value
those we have and we will offer support and training to anyone who is
interested in becoming one.”
