Mom needed to okay adoption
October 18, 2004

By Norman Joseph

A baby boy, who was found as a newborn after being abandoned at a Fish Hoek
taxi rank, could be adopted if his biological mother is found and gives her
permission.

Named Luke by Tiggy and Paul Goodwin, who took him into their Fish Hoek home,
the now five-month-old baby was found on May 1 at the Site 5 taxi rank in
Masiphumelele.

Luke was only a few hours old and still had his umbilical cord attached when he
was discovered by taxi commuters. He was admitted to a city hospital and later
released into the care of the Goodwins, who are now prepared to adopt him.

Tiggy Goodwin said: "He has a lovely nature and is an easy-going and happy
baby.

"We have no biological children, but an adoptive daughter, Sally, who is now
four and was also abandoned."
She said Sally absolutely adored Luke.

Anyone with information about the identity and whereabouts of Luke's biological
mother is asked to call social worker Hennie Verhoef on 021 710 9897.

l Social workers at the Association of Afrikaans Christian Women have appealed
for help in finding the biological mother of an abandoned newborn baby girl.

The baby was found by a Mitchell's Plain resident under a bridge near
Mitchell's Plain railway
station on September 20.

She was dressed in a grey babygro. Two blankets were nearby.

Social workers have placed her in the care of a Mitchell's Plain family pending
a final recommendation by the commissioner of Child Welfare.

It has since been established that her biological mother gave birth at the
Mitchell's Plain Day Hospital. The mother, believed to be in her late teens,
admitted herself and was not accompanied by anybody.

She was discharged the same day. Investigations have also revealed that the
personal details she gave to hospital staff were incorrect.
