Beware of baby selling scam

By Azlan Othman
Scam artists are getting smarter by the day. There seems to be no end to their
ingenuous plots to lure the gullible while trying to evade the long arm of the
law.
The latest case of an "amah" allegedly trying to "sell off" her twins born out
of wedlock has come to light in Kuala Belait.

A married woman in KB was recently duped by the amah who promised to give away
one of her newborn twins for "adoption".

But the offer came with a request. The amah sought $50 to buy diapers and to
cover other minor expenses. She gave a mobile number for contact but it turned
out to be false. The KB woman warned members of the public not to fall prey to
any such offers.

Speaking to the Bulletin, the woman said, "I believe it's a con job and I may
not be the only victim.

"The amah reportedly gave birth to twins a few days ago as a result of an
alleged illegitimate relationship with a local man. I wanted to adopt the baby
girl with an intention of giving the baby to my colleague who does not have
one.

"I gave her $50 and the amah in return gave me her mobile phone number with an
intention of delivering the child. When I tried to ring, the number seemed to
be false," she said.

Apparently, the amah was willing to hand over the twins for $100 but the KB
woman only agreed to take one for $50. The woman, however, said she did not
lodge a police report.

The police reminded the public to report any cheating cases to the nearest
police station and advised them not to fall victim to empty promises by
irresponsible persons.
