MP concerned over trafficking of children
Chairperson of the National Children's Foundation, MP Guler Ahmadova, told a
Friday session of the Milli Majlis (parliament) that she was concerned over the
'trafficking of children' taking place in Azerbaijan under the pretext of
international adoption.
186 Azeri children were sold over the last three years, including 156 to US
citizens, she said.
Ahmadova said that in taking the children out of the country, the adopting
parents blatantly violated five provisions of the Family Code.
"Under the law, Azeri citizens waiting for their turn are entitled to adopt
these children first, and then foreign nationals. Instead, the children are
taken by foreigners illegally, often without the consent of their parents."
Ahmadova said about 200 criminal cases have been started in this connection.
