More Tasmanians look overseas to adopt
Overseas adoptions are on the rise in Tasmania.
During the past four years, Tasmanian families have adopted 77 children from
Ethiopia, China, India, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, Romania and Sri
Lanka.
The families met at Campbell Town yesterday.
The manager of adoption services with the Department of Human Services, Una
Hobday, says inter-country adoptions have risen alongside increased community
awareness of the possibilities.
"Adopting of local children is very difficult because in a year we perhaps
would only have two children available for adoption, so that people who have
gone through the process often of IVF [in-vitro fertilisation] over long
periods of time and all of the other things, then they look at adoption and we
really want to give a child an opportunity of a family," she said.

A good friend will come and bail you out of jail . . . but, a true friend will
be sitting next to you saying, "Damn . . . that was fun!"
