Hi
I'm a UK accountant married to an australian. We're planning on
heading out to Oz next year. Has anyone any advice on the
practicalities of finding work in the Melbourne or Sydney area? Is it
remotely possible from the UK or is it just one of those "pack your
bags & home" things?
You usually need to be physically in Australia for employers to be
interested in hiring you, unless there's a real skill shortage for
your speciality.
Recognition of UK qualifications by the Australian accountancy bodies
is not as good as it should be, unless you're a chartered accountant.
On the other hand you don't need to join an Australian professional
body to work as an accountant (except for a few specialisms). Many
employers and recruitment agents, especially in the big cities, are
quite familiar with UK qualifications (ACCA/CIMA) and are often
willing to accept them as equivalent to the usual CA/CPA requirement.
You may find some value added in doing a law/tax conversion course,
but that's not compulsory.
