Adopting babies from Vietnam
BY MARY O'CONNOR

People interested in adopting children from Vietnam can now do so thanks to a
new agreement which has been signed between it and Ireland.

Minister for Children Brian Lenihan recently announced the recommencement of
adoptions from the Asian country following the ratification of a bilateral
agreement on adoption by Ireland and Vietnam.

Western Health Board chief executive Dr Sheelah Ryan says adoptions recommenced
from Vietnam on July 6. People interested in adopting children from there can
now apply with immediate effect.

"The agreement was negotiated by a team from the adoption board and the
Department of Health and Children headed by the Irish Ambassador to Malaysia.

"It creates a basis for the protection of the rights of the child and promotes
co-operation between Vietnam and Ireland in compliance with best international
practice."

For further details contact the adoption board at (01) 2309300.
