Autopsy Findings Revealed in Death of Gilmore Girl; Case Grows More Bizarre

AUGUST 24, 2004 - Posted at 5:09 p.m. CDT

MARION, AR - New information was released this afternoon in the murder of
Gilmore's Patricia Ann Miles.

Crittenden County Sheriff's investigators called a news conference this
afternoon, stating that someone suffocated the 7-year-old girl by covering up
her mouth and nose, causing death by asphyxiation due to external obstruction.

Authorities stopped short of saying it happened at the hands of prime suspect
Jo Ann Buchanan, who remains in the Crittenden County jail on $1 million bond
for the kidnapping of Miles. Buchanan, who babysat Miles, was the last one
seen with her when she disappeared on August 15. Additional charges have not
yet been filed against Buchanan.

Investigators also revealed this afternoon that a two-month-old female infant
died while in the care of Buchanan in 1998. That death was ruled to be by
natural cause. Meanwhile, K8 News has also learned that misdemeanor battery
charges were filed against Buchanan in February due to an incident that occured
in Turrell.

In another unusual twist to an already bizarre case, after viewing what police
say is the body of Patricia Ann Miles in a local funeral home, the adoptive
mother of the girl claims it is not the body of her adopted daughter. Police
insist it is, and hope to have DNA results back by Thursday to back up their
claim.
