I've been told that biological mothers and daughters in the same household
menstruate on the same cycle. Does this also hold true with adoptive mothers
and daughters?

Inquiring Dads want to know.

I understand that any group of women living together long enough will
synchronize eventually. I wonder what survival benefit there might be in that,
if any?

It might assist the survival of men in the household; I grew up as
one of 4 females. My father and brothers used to complain that there
was never a time when no-one was screaming or throwing crockery. I
don't recall synchronised menstrual cycles... I think the ancient
hebrew idea of a seclusion tent for menstruating women sounds bloody
civilised

I think females, regardless of connection, who live in close proximity tend to
cycle similarly due to some sort of pheremones. At least that is the rumor I
heard.

Actually, I don't believe it's universally true for bios, either. I
think there is a *tendency* to synchronize (at home or in dorms), but
it seldom achieves the same cycle.

And speaking from my personal experience, it doesn't necessarily
happen with bio daughters and mums either.

I agree. However, I think my husband is forever traumatized by growing up
with 6 sisters who, according to him, all went on the rag at the exact same
time ;)

Gee thanks (Have you read "The Red Tent'?) Rh. M

Yes, several times. It would have to be a favourite of mine. They all
seemed to manage to synchronise their menstruation. Was there no-one
left to cook meals and look after the kids? Did they care??? Poetic
justice I think for a society which held women in such low regard.

Indeed.
Maybe instead of cooking, or looking after the kids, everybody just
did a nice sustaining Busby Berkely type tribal dance.
You know, like, 'It's so iniquituous, so ubiquitous, that good old
synchronized rag.'
I can just see it on Broadway.
