Two sets of parents claim ‘miracle baby’

At least one child at the centre of the ‘miracle babies’ scandal has been
claimed by two sets of parents who have turned up at the Criminal
Investigations Department headquarters in Nairobi.
Daniel Wesonga, who was among children taken into custody when police raided
the home of Eddah and Michael Odera in Nairobi, was claimed a second time
yesterday by Mr Duncan Muli.
The Oderas were arrested in connection with investigations into the ‘miracle
babies’ saga revolving around Archbishop Gilbert Deya of Deya ministries.
Eleven children were taken from the Odera’s house and are now in protective
custody.
The boy, whom Mrs Eddah Odera had alleged she delivered on June 22, 1999, had
earlier been claimed by Doreen Makena and Patrick Maina Waweru of Nyeri — who
said their son disappeared after birth at Nairobi’s Pumwani Maternity
Hospital.
Yesterday, Muli displayed the framed picture of his son, whom he said
disappeared from Kibera in June 2001. He narrated how he engaged the services
of a witchdoctor to help him recover his son, but in vain.
Makena had told journalists that after a normal delivery of a healthy boy at
Pumwani, she was later told that he had died. She said she was suspicious when
the nurses buried the body before showing it to her on December 31, 2002.
Another couple, Mrs Lucy Wamaitha Ondieki and her husband, Mr Francis Mbugua,
travelled from their home in Njoro, Nakuru District, to claim yet another baby,
whom they said was stolen in January 2000.
Ondieki claimed her son, Christopher Ihugo, was stolen at the age of 14 months
from their home in Njoro. The couple told of their agonising but futile search
for their child that took them to several districts.
Wamaitha, who was carrying a picture of the child, said her sister had left the
boy sitting at the doorstep of their house to go and get him a meal of
porridge. She was shocked to find the baby missing when she returned.
"If you compare the picture I have with that on the newspapers, it is my baby,"
said Lucy amid sobs.
And as the claims threw the babies saga into deeper confusion, Catholic
Archbishop Ndingi Mwana a’Nzeki said that the only miracle birth that has
ever taken place is that of Jesus Christ.
Speaking during the ground-breaking ceremony for St Monicah Catholic Church,
Karanjee, Limuru, the cleric said: "The only virgin birth ever recorded in
world history is that of the Virgin Mary. None other has ever been known and
nobody should cheat us now."
He advised those wishing to have children but were biologically unable to
consider adoption instead of lying about unheard of births.
Those claiming children from the police said they were ready to undergo DNA
testing to confirm whether or not they were the real parents.
