Hi from Iowa. My step daughter turns 18 in Oct of 06. She dropped out of school when she was 17. She doesn't have a job, and is supposedly trying to get her GED. She tells us that she has the math and science portion yet to pass.

Her is our delima. We recently changed custody when she was 16. The divorce decree states that "in the event that the said child has not graduated from high school by age 18, said child support shall continue for that child until she graduates from high school, receives an equivalent certificate of graduation, GED or diploma or reaches the age of 19. Whichever shall first occur." WE should have read the paperwork better, but never would have imagined that she would drop out of high school.

We have very little contact with her and have probably seen her 3 times this past year. She doesn't want much to do with us, because we have expectations of her.

Does anyone have any advice on how we could get this child support to stop when she turns 18. She is basically sitting her butt at home all day or out with friends, not working, smoking pot, driving without a license, drinking, hosting sex toy parties, at one point she was dating a 23 year old and had moved in with him. Now she doesn't know we know most of this, but I have access to her email account and have read her emails and printed several of them off for proof.

I guess I am just looking for any advice or help. My husband and I work two jobs to pay for this support and live paycheck to paycheck. It stinks knowing our hard earned money is not going towards the right things for his daughter. I also don't think that my stepdaughter will get her GED by the time she turns 18 (much less 19).

HELP!!!!

based on the wording of the order I don't think the cs could be dropped, and if you did successfully fight it, you may very well end up paying just as much in legal fees as would have been paid in cs- cause mom's lawyer will definitely drag it out as long as possible to get as close to the "finish line" as possible

Looks like from court orders that child support remains in effect until she gets GED or turns 19...or for better lack of words (whichever occur first).

So just hope she finishes up and get her GED as planned and not drag the completion of acquiring the GED, so that way child support can terminate, providing you don't owe any arrears to the state.

So continue to pay it....until the court/judge states on your court documents.
