Hello.

I work for the state, and in our CBA we have just changed from NDI to SDI eff 4/1/06.

I'm not pregnant yet, but am planning. I've been here over a year.

OK, so here's my question:

If I have this right, I can file FMLA and SDI concurrently, receive SDI for as long as my doctor says I'm disabled (typically 6 weeks), then file for PFL for 6 weeks?

Then for additional bonding time, can I file for CFRA and take an additional 4 weeks? If so, can I use my vacation time and sick time to fund this?

Thanks,

Nisha

SDI is for pay, FMLA (and PDL, the California Pregnancy Disability leave, which runs concurrently) are to protect your job.

Likewise, PFL (Paid family leave, paid through SDI) is for pay, CFRA (the California Family Rights Act) is for job protection.

For pay, once your baby is born, you will get SDI for at least 6 weeks (8 weeks for a C-section) and PFL for 6 weeks.

If you want to take longer, you can take another 6 weeks unpaid (using your sick and vacation if your employer lets you) that is job-protected by CFRA.
