Babies given safe haven

After three years of legislative debate it was refreshing to read in the July
31 article in The Republican that Massachusetts has become the 47th state in
the nation to adopt a law to protect newborns.

While no one can question the emotional turmoil these panicked young parents
are going through and that this is a wonderful alternative, caution must not be
overlooked.

As a registered nurse, having practiced for many years in newborn intensive
care, I and others in this health-related field are all too aware of the safety
concerns encountered by a newborn during the first few days of life.
Maintaining body temperature is paramount and can lead to life threatening
complications if this is not established, to say nothing of the delicate fluid
and electrolyte balance necessary in these first crucial days.

The importance of early recognition and treatment of these conditions can not
be overlooked. It is vital that someone with clinical expertise in the
management of these complications be available immediately when a newborn is
dropped off, and transportation to an appropriate facility where further care
can be assured is guaranteed.

As we send out this message to these young parents that there is a safe haven,
we must also alert these young parents to the importance of keeping the infant
safe until the necessary help can intervene. VIRGINIA HYDE Longmeadow
