Steinberg spent the last 17 years in prison for beating his adopted daughter.

The death of 6-year-old Lisa Steinberg rocked the city back in 1987, and
Steinberg was sentenced to 25-years in prison. But mandatory parole laws forced
the state to release him after Steinberg served two thirds of his sentence.

Marcus Solis reports from Hamilton Heights with the story.

Steinberg is now one of 60 or so residents of this facility called "The
Castle." If he thought New Yorkers would have forgotten about his release, or
forgotten about his crime, he was sadly mistaken.

It was just after 1:00 p.m. when Joel Steinberg arrived in the borough where he
committed one of the most notorious crimes in city history. Parole officers
tried to shield him, but the 63-year-old's return was a messy affair. At one
point, the paroled killer fell on the steps leading to the halfway house. It
was far cry from the flamboyant departure this morning.

After serving 16 years, Steinberg left on Wednesday morning in a white
stretch-limousine, riding in comfort over four hours, and 200 miles.

In 1987 Steinberg, then a lawyer, beat to death his illegally-adopted
6-year-old daughter. His girlfriend testified against him saying he smoked
cocaine, and beat Lisa that night because he felt she was staring at him. He
was repeatedly refused parole, but could no longer be legally incarcerated. It
is unclear how long he will stay at the facility called 'The Castle.'

JoAnne Page, The Fortune Society: "What we do with every client is develop a
case plan, and it will be individually decided."

Under the terms of his parole, Steinberg must:

He must attend drug treatment, anger management classes.
He will have a curfew of 7:00 p.M.
He can not drink, drive, or use online services.
He is prohibited from contacting any of his victims or minors.
The no-contact provision includes a now teenage adoptive son, who now lives
with his biological mother.

At the Castle, he will have access to a number of rehabilitative services. But
he will not enjoy the support of the community. A handful of protesters drew up
signs upon learning of their new neighbor.

Luis Tejada uses the Castle to host a domestic violence prevention program.

Luis Tejada, Neighborhood Resident: "We have use of this conference room. And
then we have a guy that was in there because he killed (his) daughter."

Angel Ozuma, Neighborhood Resident: "Let him pay his debt to society somewhere
else. Why around here? Why bring him around here? They could have chosen
somewhere else."

Steinberg reportedly has been offered a job as an intern of a cable access show
produced by his lawyer. He will remain on parole for the next eight years.

A good friend will come and bail you out of jail . . . but, a true friend will
be sitting next to you saying, "Damn . . . that was fun!"
