S'pore woman held runs adoption agency
Woman arrested in Jakarta for alleged baby trafficking claims she was helping a
client adopt a girl

By Theresa Tan and Vivi Zainol

A SINGAPOREAN woman arrested in Jakarta earlier this month for alleged baby
trafficking is said to run an adoption agency here.

Madam Ng, 61, who was arrested by the Indonesian police with two Indonesian
women, told The Straits Times over the phone from a Jakarta police detention
centre: 'I'm innocent. I didn't do anything wrong.

'I don't even know why I'm detained.'

She claimed all she did was to help her client, known as Brenda, adopt a
three-month-old Indonesian baby girl.

According to Indonesian media reports, Brenda had paid 25 million rupiah
(S$4,575) for the baby.

However, a medical check-up showed the baby might be HIV-positive.

Madam Ng admitted that a woman had taken the baby girl to Indonesia. She was
asked by her client, Brenda, to fly to Jakarta to help her get her baby back.

However, she was arrested shortly after she arrived in Jakarta.

Madam Ng said she knew very little about the Indonesians who provided her with
babies for adoption.

She was only told that the infants were from poor families.

She said: 'The Indonesians call us as we run an adoption agency. We tell them
we run a legitimate business and only want babies obtained legally.'

According to the Jakarta Post, a non-governmental agency alerted the Jakarta
Social Welfare Agency, which notified the police as it suspected baby
trafficking.

When contacted, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman here said: 'We're
aware of the case. The Singapore Embassy in Jakarta has been in contact with
Madam Ng and is providing consular assistance.'

A check with the Registry of Companies showed that Madam Ng is one of the
owners of Joyful Marriage & Child Adoption Agency.

Madam Ng's daughter confirmed that her mother runs the adoption agency but
declined to be interviewed.

Madam Ng's lawyer in Jakarta, Mr Kenny Wiston, said his client did not commit a
crime under Indonesian law and was implicated because she stayed in the same
hotel as Brenda.

He said: 'She just came here to make sure the baby was in good hands. There was
no transaction or payment of money.'

Although Indonesian police said investigations were still ongoing, her lawyer
believes Madam Ng stands a good chance of being released, unless it could be
proven that she knew the source of the babies.

They do have to introduce some fresh blood occasionally to overcome the
problems caused by over a thousand years of inbreeding. But that's not the
usual way around the problem is it? I think it's likely to be noticed.
Whose is she going to try and pass it off as, Edward and Sophie's, Charles
and Camilla 's or is it going to be a late sprog for Ann?

Well, I for one was surprised at the arrival of Andrew and Edward rather
late in the game, but I suppose that waiting 40+ years for another is a bit
of a stretch even for the Royals. I opt for Charles and Camilla. Ann
doesn't like sprog.

Did you read the latest Burrell delusions? Diana drove him around
Paddington to talk to hookers? On puleeze! And his remark that Brender
has bigger balls than Charles! Why doesn't his long-suffering wife kick
this lunatic to the curb?

You know, I always felt Charles screwed up by picking an English rose.

He should have had an arranged marriage to an Indian princess (or
rather, a former princess, since royal titles were abolished...)

She would have been a virgin, which was apparently a requirement,
never married before, and generally biddable. There would have been no
divorce, only, if the marriage was failing, a quiet distance. And
would certainly have imported fresh blood.

I can imagine the Hindi movie version of this story already.

Finding Charles a 'Commonwealth bride' was seriously discussed in the 1960s
It would have been great idea. Despite India's republican status within the
Commonwealth I'm sure a traditional Indian bride would have been most
acceptable and the Bollywood style wedding would have been much enjoyed.

BTW it's not too late if you have someone in mind for Prince William.
