Hi. I'd like to find out something about credit card debt. If a single
person dies, can any relatives, such as a brother or sister, be held
responsible for paying their credit card bills? I read somewhere that
bills would be paid from the dead person's estate, but what if the bills
are higher then the value of the estate?
I'm in New Jersey, in case this is a subject that is regulated by state
law.
Thanks,
George

Generally, family members are not liable for the debts of someone
who dies. If there isn't enough money in the estate to pay them,
the balance is simply uncollectable.

It isn't meant to be legal advice and you shouldn't treat it as

and the law applicable to your situation.

Unless the relative was a signatory to the account (joint holder) s/he
is in no way personally liable for the debt. That goes for anyone --
sibling, parent, child, etc.
