NSW criticised over increasing adoption fees
The New South Wales Opposition says the Government is being greedy by tripling
the fees for people wanting to adopt children from overseas.

From July 1, people will have to pay $9,700 to legally adopt children through
the Department of Community Services.

Shadow Community Services Minister John Ryan says other states and private
agencies charge much less but people in New South Wales have no choice but to
go through the department.

"There is no way in New South Wales you can go through anybody but the
Government because, although the Government has been promising for years to do
so, they haven't accredited any private adoption agencies," he said.

"They have absolutely no competition. They can charge whatever the Government
wants to.

"They are a monopoly provider and it doesn't seem to me that they are providing
this at a cost recovery.

"It seems to me that they're simply fleecing these parents because they're a
potential target who, in many instances, will be prepared to pay anything in
order to desperately fulfil the role of becoming parents."
