A human services organization seeks local families interested in adopting an
infant in Louisiana.
Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans is in the process of compiling a
list of the names of potential adoptive families through its recently expanded
domestic adoption program called "ACCESS to life." Recruitment for the list
will continue through June 30.
Catholic Charities aims to find couples who have been married at least three
years, have explored infertility and who are Louisiana residents between the
ages of 27 and 45, adoption program director Danna Cousins said.
Interested parties are asked to complete a preliminary questionnaire and attend
a general information and orientation session that will be held this summer,
possibly mid-August. There is no cost associated with becoming part of the
general pool of potential adoptive families.
"Families who are accepted into the program will attend educational classes and
receive support and legal assistance to guide them through the adoption
process," she said.
Placement varies but could be within two years for this year's adoptive
families. The goal is to open a list each year from May 1 through June 30, she
said.
The number of newborns available for adoption is unknown at this time. The
majority of the babies are expected to be healthy and younger than 6 months,
she said.
In addition, Catholic Charities will continue offering international adoption
services through International Adoption Program director Karen Caldwell, who
has handled international adoptions with the agency for the past 20 years.
The human services agency operates 32 programs that address various social
issues and serves people of every faith and background, according to a news
release.
