MYSTERY BROOKLYN TOT TURNS UP IN BALTIMORE

By MARSHA KRANES

May 18, 2004 -- A forlorn little girl who says she's from Brooklyn is living in
a foster home in Baltimore because officials can't locate her parents or
guardian.
"She says her name is Courtney. She's 3 1/2 years old. She says she's Puerto
Rican," a spokeswoman for the Baltimore Department of Social Services told
WBAL-TV in Baltimore.

Despite efforts to find out more, that's the only information the abandoned tot
was able to provide about herself.

Child-welfare officials are hoping someone will recognize her picture so they
can reunite her with her family.

Courtney cried and asked for her mother repeatedly during an interview with a
WBAL reporter.

She was turned over to police by a woman who said she had been asked to watch
the youngster by a man who identified himself as Courtney's father.

The woman said the man told her that he and Courtney had been living in an
abandoned warehouse and he needed someone to keep an eye on the tot while he
went to cash some money orders so he could rent an apartment.

The woman agreed and the man dropped Courtney off - but he never returned for
the youngster.

Police said they have no missing-person report matching Courtney's description.

The little girl has been placed temporarily in a foster home.

Officials said she appeared to have been well cared for.

They also said they have no reason to doubt the little information Courtney
offered about herself.

If her parents or guardian aren't located, she'll likely be put up for
adoption, WBAL reported.
