Reps back Safe Haven plan - Billerica
Town Meeting representatives approved a petitioned article calling for the town
to back the proposed "Safe Baby Haven Act." If passed by the state Legislature,
the measure would allow the parent of a newborn to leave the infant with
personnel at a police station, fire station or hospital without question.

Representatives approved the article with an amendment stipulating that the
state Department of Social Services be called in cases of abandonment, although
Police Chief Daniel Rosa said this requirement is already part of state law.
